1r: YAYOI KUSAMA

Our First Graders Explore the World of Yayoi Kusama!

This term, our first-grade students have been learning all about the amazing Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. Known for her love of bold colors, dots, and pumpkins, Kusama has inspired us with her creativity and unique style.

We started by exploring her life and how she became an artist. The children were fascinated to learn that Kusama has been creating art since she was a young girl in Japan, and that she uses art to express her feelings and imagination. We looked at many of her famous artworks, especially her colorful installations and sculptures filled with dots and patterns.

The highlight of our project was creating a small-scale version of one of Kusama’s most iconic sculptures: her giant pumpkin! Using paper, paint, and lots of polka dots, each child designed their own mini pumpkin sculpture. They worked carefully to capture Kusama’s playful style and bright, eye-catching designs.

It has been a joyful and inspiring journey into the world of Yayoi Kusama, and our young artists are so proud of their work!
